JOB: Global Engagement Program Manager

Job Summary

The Global Engagement Program Manager (GEPM) will be responsible for managing the programs, administration, and research activities of the Ford School’s International Policy Center (IPC), a hub for international policy engagement and learning. The GEPM will support the work of IPC faculty affiliates, as well as planning and supporting our student facing global engagement activities. The GEPM will also help to support activities of the new Weiser Diplomacy Center (WDC) as needed.

Responsibilities*

Research

Identify and disseminate funding opportunities related to the research of IPC faculty affiliates. Help faculty develop research proposals and help draft, refine, and submit grant applications as needed. 
Work with the IPC Director to identify, recruit, and host suitable IPC Visiting Scholars. Assist the IPC Director in exploring and developing institutional partnerships to pursue international policy research.
Manage the program of IPC Research Awards for Ford School doctoral students.

Student-Facing Programs

Manage and develop global educational programs for graduate and undergraduate students, in consultation with the IPC Director, WDC Faculty Director, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dean and Ford School faculty. This will include developing and implementing strategies to engage students; promoting and maintaining international collaborative partnerships to foster learning around key policy issues; working with faculty to identify new partners; and negotiating agreements with relevant academic units and partners. 
Advise students on global learning opportunities at the Ford School and the University through one-on-one advising, classroom presentations, information sessions, pre-departure and re-entry orientations. 
Assist faculty with the student selection process for our global engagement courses. Coordinate student travel and accommodations and related financial commitments for global study opportunities. Assist the faculty and IPC Director in ensuring the safety of our students while traveling abroad. 
Manage IPC’s program of support for overseas student internships and student-led international initiatives, in close collaboration with the IPC Director and WDC Faculty Director and staff. Help to develop new opportunities for international internships and applied policy seminar offerings.
Manage and oversee administrative infrastructure related to global student programs, internships and overseas research work including MCompass, travel registry, travel insurance, safety/security training, Clery Act training and reporting, and monitoring travel warnings. Advise Deans and faculty regarding travel warnings and travel bans or other travel challenges to student destinations. 
Collaborate with other University offices, such as Global Michigan and the International Institute, and Area Studies programs, to promote international and intercultural learning; act as Ford School representative on the U-M Council for Global Engagement and International Education Network; and participate on the Ford School’s Global Engagement Task Force.
Work closely with Student and Academic Services staff to manage scholarship and financial aid opportunities for students pursuing international learning opportunities.
Work closely with the office of Graduate Career Services and Alumni Relations to research and identify international opportunities for graduate internships. Initiate and organize applications to groups across campus for partnership support with internships or applied policy work.
Assist the IPC Director in managing the Ford School’s master’s degree concentrations in International Policy and International Development; work with appropriate Ford School faculty and committees on policies and curricular matters related to IPC’s global opportunities.

Outreach & Events

Pursue collaboration for research and student programming with potential partners, including other U-M units, peer universities, foundations, and official agencies.Manage our relationship with APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs). 
Work with the development director, IPC Director and dean to support stewardship of donor funds. 
Plan public events, academic workshops and conferences, and seminars in collaboration with the IPC Director, Ford School faculty and the school’s Communications and Outreach Office. Manage event format, catering, travel and other logistics as needed. Assist with WDC events as needed.
Manage communications and marketing materials to publicize IPC-related activities in collaboration with our Communications and Outreach office and WDC staff. Manage content of the IPC website and global engagement information on the Ford School site. 

Administration

Manage IPC’s operational activities, including overseeing the budget, preparing travel requests and reimbursements, requisitions, purchase orders, event planning and support, and other related duties as needed. Supervise IPC’s administrative assistant. 



Required Qualifications*

A Master’s degree or other graduate degree and at least three years of experience managing academic programs or policy-related projects with an international component. 
Substantial experience conducting or supporting academic research and continuing interest in supporting research in areas including international human rights, development, and security. 
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to cultivate relationships with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, policymakers and other external partners. 
Advanced experience with managing databases and using Microsoft Office Suite products. 
Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks, ability to work independently, exercise initiative as a critical member of a small team, and function in a dynamic environment. 

Desired Qualifications*

Significant experience with international education (i.e., sending students to overseas destinations and managing incoming international students). 
Experience working effectively in international affairs or foreign policy with international organizations, NGOs, and/or government agencies. 
Fluency in a second language, preferably Chinese or Spanish. 
Demonstrated knowledge and application of international cultural competencies in communication with non-US individuals, agencies, and governments. 
Demonstrated success in working with students in a positive, collaborative manner. Experience mentoring students/student groups, including highly developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
