Job: Graduate Student Advisor

Responsibilities
Student Admissions: Oversee and coordinate student admissions and Rackham Merit Award Fellowship competition for the Masters in International and Regional Studies graduate programs.  Support the eight regional and thematic subplan admissions and fellowship committees. Compose acceptance and rejection letters and track student responses.  Manage applications within Rackham on-line application system.  Process all graduate program scholarship and fellowship payments and Gradcare. 

Student Advising: Counsel prospective students on graduate program and associated subplans, dual-degrees with U-M professional schools, and graduate certificates, fellowships and internships, employment opportunities, and relevant programming events. Provide one-on-one advising with in-person appointments, phone calls and emails. Advise students on requirements of the graduate program, course selection, help students assess course options. Provide accurate information about policies and procedures, maintain accurate records in student electronic files, maintain degree audits, and serve as an informed resource for all II graduate academic services. Maintain online advising calendar. Develop relationships with students, advise students from point of orientation through graduation providing continuity throughout their time at U-M.  Maintain a close, collaborative relationship with the II programs and centers, and Rackham Graduate School. Lead efforts to establish relationships with LSA departments and non LSA units to collaborate on graduate courses and dual-degree programs of study. As a part of the II Academic Services team, collaborate and provide academic support to the II’s undergraduate majors and minors.

Curricular Administration: Prepare Course Approval Request Forms (CARFs) and Program Approval Request Forms (PARFs) for graduate courses and the graduate program; schedule graduate courses and coordinate their publicity.  Establish meet-together courses with other units, approve graduation requirements to be submitted to Rackham Graduate School.  Manage graduate course scheduling/permissions processes within M-Pathways. Assist academic services manager, academic advising coordinator, program directors and other team members in projects such as: development of reports that relate to student services, assessment of student plans of study, course enrollments, course planning, curricular updates and course approvals. Provide ad hoc data request and analysis on enrollment trends and graduation projections.  Regularly attend Rackham Graduate School and College of LSA meetings and trainings for graduate services coordinators.

Program Coordination: Lead orientation sessions for students interested in graduate program.  Lead appropriate outreach efforts; represent the II at campus events to prospective students and University advisors. Lead weekly graduate student study hall and semi-regular graduate workshop events.  Attend graduate social events: career events, professional and academic networking events, graduation/receptions, etc.  Coordinate and report on accounts designated for graduate student scholarships and fellowships.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree
  • At least three years of admissions, recruitment and outreach experience, or equivalent, in Higher education, International Studies, International Relations or similar
  • Exemplary work ethic
  • Collaborative work style and team-building skill; ability to work with diverse constituencies; ability to lead groups
  • Willingness to be innovative; capacity for exercising initiative
  • Ability to adapt to change
  • Ability to act independently; manage multiple tasks as once, and exercise good judgment
  • Demonstrated advising/counseling skills
  • Familiarity with college students and the college environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with technology and its application in an academic advising setting

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in International Studies, International Relations, or Area Studies or a related field
  • Experience with graduate program administration
  • Extensive knowledge of College policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Strong cross-cultural interpersonal skills
  • Experience with any of the University’s student services modules on M-Pathways
