Job Summary
The U-M International Institute (II) and its centers provide over $4 million each year to support international research and study. This funding includes fellowships and grants for faculty and student research abroad, international internships, the study of less commonly taught languages and conference travel and event funding. The II collaborates with units across the University to administer high profile, national fellowship programs such as the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Luce Scholars Program, the Boren Fellowship for International Study, and the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship. Additionally, the II administers internal funding such as the International Institute's Student Fellowships as well as many other II center fellowships and grants.
The II is seeking a half-time Fellowships and Grants advisor to assist with the administration, advising and promotion of these programs.
Responsibilities*
50% Administration: Assist in the administration of all campus and outgoing processes for undergraduates, alumni, and applicants to the many fellowships and grants managed by the II, including: U.S. Dept. of State Fulbright U.S. Student Program & English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) and Fulbright Arts grants, II Student Fellowships (IISF), II Conference Travel grant, and various center fellowships.
35% Advising: Individually advise students and other eligible candidates for fellowships to develop nationally competitive dossiers, help student present politically or culturally sensitive/controversial topics in an appropriate manner, advise students on project scope and suitability of projects relative to country and Fulbright program objectives, connect student with faculty whose disciplinary-specific expertise is appropriate to support the proposed project, edit/advise on content of grant proposals
15% Program promotion: Inform students of fellowship & grant opportunities within U-M and nationally, assist in the development of new web content and resource sites, host fellowships webinars and info-sessions, utilize strategic emails, newsletter and social media to inform and recruit students
Required Qualifications*
- Associate’s degree
- One to three years experience in an academic setting
- Exemplary work ethic
- Collaborative work style and team-building skill
- Ability to work with diverse constituencies
- Willingness to be innovative; capacity for exercising initiative
- Ability to adapt to change
- Ability to act independently; manage multiple tasks as once, and exercise good judgment
- Demonstrated advising/counseling skills
- Familiarity with college students and the college environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills
- Familiarity with technology and its application in an academic advising setting
- Competency in data retrieval programs in a file-server environment
- Proficiency in MS Office suite
- Familiarity with data management systems
- Must reliably manage responsibilities and manage time effectively
- Demonstrate a proven ability to maintain the strictest level of confidentiality and use excellent judgment on a variety of sensitive subjects
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate complex activities and ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
Desired Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in International Studies, International Relations, Area Studies or a related field
- One to three years experience in administering fellowships and/or funding preferred
- Extensive knowledge of College policies, procedures, and requirements
- Strong cross-cultural interpersonal skills
- Experience with the University’s student services and student finance modules on M-Pathways
Additional Information
This is a 50% position, 20 hours per week, salary will equate to $20,000-$26,500 annually based on a full time range of $40,000 - $53,000
