We are now seeking an assistant professor, associate professor or full professor in the field of Russian language and culture.
The position is located in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The Languages Unit of the Faculty explores the intricacies of human interaction and communication in and across different languages. The research conducted in the Unit examines the functions of language in society and the challenges of cultural and linguistic diversity. The Degree Programme in Languages provides students with in-depth expertise in the areas of language, culture, translation and interpretation. Students can major in Finnish, Swedish, English, Russian and German.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished academic who will be an active and innovative co-builder of the research and teaching area of Russian language and culture. The final profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise and can include for example the following themes: 
  • literary and cultural interactions 
  • multidisciplinary cultural research
  • the study of Russian literary, visual and media texts 
In this position you are expected to: 
  • pursue and supervise scientific research in the field,
  • lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision in the Degree Programme in Languages
  • seek, win and manage research funding
  • demonstrate effective academic leadership engaging with external stakeholders 
In line with the spearhead profile of the university, research in the Languages Unit in general, and in the Russian section in particular, emphasises the societal aspects of language, culture and literature. The tenure track professor of Russian language and culture will also participate in research and teaching in the joint profile areas of the Languages Unit and the Degree Programme in Languages (digitality and media, literary and cultural spaces, linguistic variety, professional communication) and will take part in the activities of the national network for Russian Studies and the Tampere Research Centre for Russian and Chinese Media (TARC). 

Requirements

Assistant Professor
We require:
  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence  
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.
Associate Professor
We require:
  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity.
Professor
We require:
  • applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 
  • track record of winning external research funding  
  • track record of international scholarly or artistic activity
We are looking for demonstrable evidence of a suitability with the strategy of Tampere University and the Faculty and a description of how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. In addition to Russian, you need to be fluent in English in order to be able to manage the position. Fluent Finnish will be considered an advantage. 

We offer

Initial appointment for assistant professor and for associate professor is for five years and subject to successful performance. You will become a tenured member of the Faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to Faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
Salaries are based on the job demands and on employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an assistant professor will range between 3675-4790 EUR/month, salary of an associate professor between 4340-5525EUR/month and salary of a professor between 5250-6395 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
