Deadline: March 22, 2021 (Dual M.A. Program) and April 30, 2021 (EUSP M.A. Programs)
UPenn-EUSP Dual M.A. in REES
The University of Pennsylvania and the European University at St.
Petersburg have opened admissions for a dual-degree M.A. program in
Russian and East European Studies, which will welcome its first cohort
of students
this coming fall. Students spend one year at Penn, followed by a summer
and a year at EUSP, engage in archival or field research leading to a
thesis, and undertake intensive language study. In distinction from many
area studies programs, in our program each
student will pursue a specified academic discipline of concentration
represented among our faculty (anthropology, art history, demography,
film studies, history, international business studies, international
relations, Jewish studies, literary and cultural
history, medieval studies, political science, sociology, etc.). At the
program’s conclusion, students receive coordinated M.A. degrees from
both Penn and EUSP. Graduates of the program will be well prepared to
pursue either further study at the Ph.D. level
or to go on to careers in government service, think tanks and business
in the United States, their home countries or internationally.
Applications for this program are due on March 22. Note as well that
fellowships will be available for a number of applicants on a
competitive basis, thanks to a generous gift from Polymetal
International, Plc. A seed grant from Carnegie Corporation of New
York made the launch of this program at Penn possible.
Students can learn more about the Penn-EUSP Dual-Degree M.A. in REES at our websites:

https://eupenn.eusp.org/. Any questions that arise can be directed to Kevin M. F. Platt (kmfplatt@sas.upenn.edu) and counterpart, Dr. Gevorg Avetikyan at EUSP (avetikyan@eu.spb.ru). (Please
include both in any correspondence).
IMARES and ENERPO M.A. Programs
EUSP also offers two standalone
international MA programs, designed especially for non-Russian students: Russian
and Eurasian Studies (IMARES) and Energy Politics
in Eurasia (ENERPO). More detailed information is available here:
http://int.eusp.org/ This year, these programs have continued in
remote online format, as a result of the ongoing health crisis. Yet we
hope and anticipate that international travel will become easier and we
will return to in-person teaching in the coming
academic year, as vaccination progresses and the pandemic eases.
Applications are due by April 30 for these programs.
A limited number of full
fellowships, with living stipend, will be available for highly qualified American students who wish to study in
EUSP’s programs in St. Petersburg next year. In order to apply for a
fellowship, in addition to applying to EUSP, students should
contact William G. Rosenberg at wgr@umich.edu.
Decisions will be made relatively quickly on a rolling basis. In the
event the pandemic will make study in St. Petersburg impossible in the
fall, it will also be possible to study online with fellowship
support, or to defer these fellowships grants.
