Fellowship for Ukrainian PhD Students @ University of Michigan

The Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE) at the University of Michigan invites applications for WCEE Research Fellowships for advanced Ukrainian PhD students.


Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program at a Ukrainian university and:

  • Currently live in Ukraine, or
  • Were living in Ukraine in February 2022 and are now displaced by the war. 

Applicants’ research can be in any scholarly field; the personal statement must demonstrate how an academic stay at the University of Michigan will benefit the candidate’s doctoral work and professional development, either through access to specific library collections, professors and research facilities, or programs. 

Candidates must have excellent oral and written English language skills; proficiency will be verified. Fellows will not enroll in coursework but may be able to audit seminars with professors’ approval. 

Benefits
The awards support short-term research visits from January 2026 to May 2026 to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and include round-trip airfare, housing, health insurance, and a modest stipend.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A copy of your official transcript
  • A copy of your passport photo page
  • A personal statement describing the research or collaborative project you plan to pursue at the University of Michigan (1000 words max)
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty of your institution
