CFA: International Workshop The Prison & the City: Spaces of Incarceration, Practices of Exclusion, and Public Communication

Deadline: May 15, 2019

Center for Urban History of East Central Europe invites scholars in all fields of the humanities and social sciences to participate in the International Workshop "The Prison & the City. Spaces of Incarceration, Practices of Exclusion, and Public Communication"

Dates: 3-4 October 2019
Location: Center for Urban History of East Central Europe, Lviv, Ukraine

The idea of this workshop is to look at prisons as a historical microcosm of urban societies and examine their contemporary re-usage.

We seek proposals that include, but are not limited to, the following themes and questions:

  • Prisons as Microcosms: What do we know about the inner social life of inmates?
  • The Prison as Incubator of Modernities: How did prison networks impact surrounding societies?
  • After the Prison: How cities dealt with the dark past of spaces of violence in their very centers?

The workshop aims to bring together scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to history, anthropology, sociology, and related disciplines, focusing on different periods and locations and exploring relationships between incarceration practices and urban settings.

Participation is free of charge. The organizers will cover travel to and accommodation in Lviv. The workshop language will be English. For more details, please click here
