American Councils Study Abroad Deadline Reminder

AC Study Abroad Spring 2026 applications are open, with the submission deadline fast approaching on October 15, 2025For undergraduates, graduates, and scholars, we will be offering the following programs: 

  • Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan
  • Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia
  • Yerevan State University in Yerevan, Armenia 
Eurasian Regional Language Program, offering 10 different languages at the sites below, including: 
  • Kazakh in Almaty, Kazakhstan
  • Romanian and Ukrainian in Chisinau, Moldova
  • Farsi, Dari, Tajik, Uzbek and Pashto in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
  • Georgian in Tbilisi, Georgia
  • Armenian in Yerevan, Armenia

American Councils continues to offer very generous financial aid. Scholarships administered directly by American Councils can be applied for within each program's application.

CFP: Virtual Open Research Laboratory at Illinois

Deadline: December 9, 2020
 

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Slavic Reference Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are pleased to announce a Call for Applications to its Spring 2021 Virtual Open Research Laboratory (VORL) Program. The program will take place from January 25 - May 5, 2021. Funded in part by the U.S. Department of State's Title VIII Program, the VORL Program provides research stipends and long-distance library support for specialists conducting research on all aspects of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
 
The program is open to a wide range of researchers, including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, independent scholars, professionals in government and nongovernmental organizations as well as library science.
 
The priority application deadline is December 9, 2020.
 
Those applicants who are U.S. citizens and whose research holds relevance for U.S. foreign policy may also apply for U.S. Department of State Title VIII grants to support their research. 
 
Awarded on a competitive basis, VORL support will include:
Designation as a REEEC Virtual Open Research Laboratory Associate
A personalized bibliographical session with the Slavic Reference Service through Zoom
Virtual research support for general queries throughout the year
Access to digital and database collections of our Library for an extended period
A free of charge duplication service from University of Illinois Library materials, restricted to 15 pages per request and subject to copyright restrictions
A research stipend of a minimum of $500 through the U.S. Department of State Title VIII Program (restricted to U.S. citizens)

Study Abroad: American Councils Webinars

This December American Councils Study Abroad will host a series of webinars to help students across the country on their study abroad journeys. We will discuss the application process, including tips for a strong application and available financial aid opportunities. We will also hold several discussions with our resident directors, Russian host families, and conversation partners. Learn about our unique approach to immersion learning and meet our staff, partners, and volunteers who make our programs possible! December 1: Financial Aid for Online Language Programs 

Learn about the various scholarship and fellowship opportunities offered by American Councils for intensive online language programs. This session will be held several times in December to accommodate all interested applicants.   

December 3: A Conversation with Study Abroad Resident Directors 

AC Staff will be joined by past and present Resident Directors from Russia and Taiwan for a conversation on the role of the Resident Director. Learn about why our staff members love working with students and how they keep you safe abroad.  

December 8: Tips for Applying to AC Study Abroad Programs 

Hear from American Councils staff on what constitutes a strong application. We'll be discussing the different elements of our online application, as well as things to keep in mind as you begin your study abroad journey! 

December 10: Home Away from Home: A Conversation with a Russian Host Family 

Living with a local host family while studying abroad is an essential part of a language immersion experience. Whether you've lived with a host family during a previous program or are traveling abroad for the first time, this session is for you! AC staff will be joined by one of our Russian host families as they discuss why they love hosting U.S. students! 

 December 15: Financial Aid for Online Language Programs  

Learn about the various scholarship and fellowship opportunities offered by American Councils for intensive online language programs. This session will be held several times in December to accommodate all interested applicants.   

December 17: Russian Discussion Club: Meet Our Conversation Partners 

In addition to intensive Russian language classes, participants on the Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) are matched with local conversation partners. These Russian peers provide opportunities for additional contact with Russian language and culture outside of the classroom. Join us for a virtual discussion club and a chance to interact with some of our current volunteer conversation partners. This session will be held entirely in Russian; all language levels are welcome!

Learning Russian in the EU: Spring Semester 2021 Study Abroad Latvia

Deadline: December 1, 2020

“Learn Russian in the European Union” is glad to announce that our Russian study abroad programs hosted at Daugavpils University in Latvia will be provided in-person in the Spring semester of 2021.


US students enrolled in our programs will be able to enter the European Union and come to Latvia regardless of existing travel restrictions. No visa is required, of course.

We are accepting applications for the following Spring 2021 study abroad programs:
    -   Russian Language, Literature and Culture;
    -   Russian Language and Political Science;
    -   Russian Language and East European Studies;
    -   Russian Language and Natural Sciences (STEM).

Spring University Prague 2020 offered by Charles University

The academic programme "Spring University Prague 2020: European Identity between Unity and Diversity", taking place at Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic) from March 29 to April 9, 2020. This study programme is internationally acknowledged, successful participants will be given 3 or 6 ECTS credits (depending on the extent of their work).
