Call for Applications! Part-time Adjunct Position in Russian at Howard University

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Howard University seeks applicants for a part-time adjunct position to teach two Russian language courses starting in Fall 2023, with the possibility to teach Russian literature and/or German language/literature courses in the future.

Preferred qualifications include: a PhD, native or near-native fluency in Russian and English, and a strong commitment to DEAI initiatives. Applicants who are ABD or have an MA with extensive teaching experience will also be considered. This is a great opportunity to acquire post-doc teaching experience and to support DEAI programs.

CFA: Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute for U.S. and Russian Professionals

The Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute for U.S. and Russian Professionals is an online learning community for global social impact leaders based on the established Atlas Corps Global Leadership Lab. Participants, known as Atlas Corps Scholars, enhance their professional skills, build their global networks, and prepare for leadership in their home communities.

The Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute is implemented with partial support from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, as part of a special initiative to build stronger ties between Russian and American citizens. The initiative will connect emerging Russian and American professionals to promote increased mutual understanding and collaboration during and after the program.

In addition to building connections with peers in Russia and the U.S., Scholars will also join the Atlas Corps network of 1100+ rising leaders from 110+ countries.

Format

The Leadership Institute is organized into five online learning modules: Orientation, Developing Self, Developing Others, Leading Movements, and Reflection. This five-month online program includes keynote speakers, interactive workshops, self-led activities, discussion groups, and community-building activities with leading U.S. organizations and leaders. Scholars will also participate in activities and guided dialogue on topics such as cross-cultural dialogue; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and U.S. and Russian civil society.

Scholars will also design and implement in-country Leadership Projects focused on their own professional development and/or on positive social impact on the community. Scholars will collaborate on Leadership Projects in peer coaching groups led by trained facilitators throughout the program. Scholars who successfully complete program requirements will be eligible to apply for small grants of up to $1000 to support the implementation of their Leadership Project, via our Community Impact Fund.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

— Fit one of the following categories: 1) Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; OR 2) a Russian citizen;

— Have two or more years of full-time professional experience working to address critical social issues;

— Possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;

— Be proficient in English (oral, writing, reading);

— Be aged 40 years old or younger;

— Have the technological capacity to participate in video calls which may be during working hours (1-2 per month);

— Be available to commit to 3 hours of online activity and assignments per week for approximately 5 months;

— Be committed to applying the knowledge gained from their Atlas Corps experience in Russia or the U.S.

This program is best suited for rising leaders who seek structured professional development, have a passion for social impact, and have an interest in making international connections with U.S. and Russian citizens. Early to mid-career professionals with a background or interest in international affairs, diplomacy, and U.S.-Russian relations will also benefit from participation in this program.

CFA: Bulgarian Instructor, University of Pittsburgh Summer Language Institute

The Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures seeks an instructor of Bulgarian for the summer of 2022.  Instructors will teach a 6-week intensive course during SLI’s summer session, which runs from June 6-July 15. Classes meet five days a week from 9 am-2:50 pm. In addition to classroom teaching, instructors are expected to help plan cultural programming for their language program and attend events for the whole institute, such as film and lecture series, workshops, and picnics. SLI expects that our programs will be conducted in an in-person format on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh, though sections may be converted to the online, synchronous format via Zoom if warranted by health conditions or strong student interest in remote attendance.  

  

Applicants must have a master’s degree in the language they will teach or related field and experience teaching in a college or university setting using the communicative approach or other proficiency-based methods.

CFA: Title VIII applications now open for 2022-2023

Attention U.S. scholars and graduate students: 

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for the next cycle of U.S. Department of State Title VIII Research Fellowships in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships are offered in two categories: 


Title VIII Research Scholar Program: 

Provides full support for research in policy-relevant fields in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty. 


Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training (CRLT) Program: 

Provides full support for research and individualized language instruction in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; logistical support; and up to 10 academic hours per week of language instruction. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty. 


Application Process 

Please note that all American Councils Title VIII Fellowship Programs must take place between June 1, 2022 and August 31, 2023. Individuals interested in applying should check the program website for more information and access to the online application. The application deadline for Title VIII fellowships is October 1, 2021. Funding for these programs is available through American Councils from the U.S. Department of State’s Program for Research and Training on Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII). All competitions for funding are open and merit based. In order to receive Title VIII funding, applicants must be U.S. citizens. All applications will receive consideration without regard to any factor such as race, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, marital status, family responsibilities, veteran status, political affiliation, or disability.
