Job: Postdoctoral position, ExpertTurn, research focus on Czechoslovakia

The Director of the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences announces a vacancy for the position of Postdoctoral researcher for the ExpertTurn team, a research project “Expertise in authoritarian societies. Human sciences in the socialist countries of East-Central Europe” (principal investigator Kateřina Lišková, supported by EXPRO of the Czech Science Foundation), more information on the project on request at subrova@hiu.cas.cz.

Start date: 1 January 2023 or by agreement

Workplace: Prague, Prosecká 809/76, 190 00 Prague 9, Czech Republic

 

Job description: research on human science expertise during state socialism in Czechoslovakia, data analysis, discussing findings within the team, writing papers for peer-reviewed journals, presenting research at international conferences, and disseminating the results to the general public.

 

The minimum job requirements: Ph.D. in social sciences or humanities, research proximity to the topic of the project, knowledge of Czech or Slovak at C1/C2 level, English at C1 level, and relevant publication activity.

 

We offer

-        Part-time job (0.7 FTE, 28 hours per week)

-        Salary 38.000,- CZK

-        Flexibility in working hours, workplace in Prague, and home office 

-      Job offer for one year with an expected extension until June 2025, upon mutual satisfaction with the first year 

-        Working in an international team on exciting new research 

-   Close cooperation with accomplished teams and researchers in Europe and beyond

-        Five weeks of vacation

UK CZECHOSLOVAK STUDIES NETWORK CALL FOR PAPERS

Reimagining ‘The Heart of Europe’

Inaugural Conference of the UK Czechoslovak Studies Network, Friday 17th September 2021, University of Oxford (online and in- person pending COVID-19 restrictions)

The conference aims to be a space for new voices and identify fruitful areas of new research focusing on the Czech and Slovak region, in any of its past and present shapes, alongside all its peoples and cultures within and beyond its borders.

The day will bring together researchers on the region to discuss current projects, establish connections, and spotlight areas for collaboration. We welcome proposals for 20-minute papers from researchers of all disciplines within the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Potential topics could include, but are not limited to, the following overlapping topics:

  • Insiders & Outsiders - this topic might encompass ideas of self-perception, class, gender, diaspora, emigration and otherness
  • Space & Place - this could include research on national space, ethnic tensions, border tensions, landscape, cityscapes, and urban bodies
  • Temporality – research may focus on regional time culture, ideas of modernity, tradition, and folk culture
  • Power – the concept of nationalism, relationship with central powers, notions of the centre and periphery

All proposals should include a title, an abstract of no more than 250 words, and a brief speaker biography of no more than 150 words. They should be submitted to jana.hunter@history.ox.ac.uk and dylan.price@music.ox.ac.uk by no later than 8th August 2021. You will know the outcome of your submission by the 15th August 2021. All other attendees may sign up for the conference by 10th September 2021.
