Course Description
GSI position to serve as a consultant in ELI’s Graduate Writing Clinic. A 25% appointment is available for both Fall and Winter terms of the 2019-2020 academic year. Continuing appointments for future academic years are available for consultants with satisfactory job performance.
Graduate Writing Clinic Consultants offer international graduate students and visiting scholars at the University of Michigan support in developing their written work, including course papers, dissertation chapters, and journal articles. This support is provided in the form of individual appointments that are scheduled through an online sign-up system. Writing Clinic Consultants’ hours are determined by the instructional fraction according to the GEO contract guidelines. This position qualifies for health benefits and a 100% tuition waiver.
Responsibilities
The purpose of Writing Clinic sessions is to work on organization, flow of ideas, and other macro writing issues, and to help participants identify and learn to self-correct their own texts. Un-booked Clinic time is used for walk-in appointments, to assist with program maintenance duties, and to engage in additional professional development.
A Writing Clinic Consultant on a 25% appointment is required to be on-site at the ELI for a minimum of 12.5 hours per week throughout the Fall and Winter terms. Approximately 10 hours per week is spent in 45-minute Clinic appointments meeting with individual graduate students to discuss their writing. The remaining 2.5 hours per week is spent in structured training and professional development activities under the direction of a Writing Clinic Faculty Mentor.
Writing Clinic Consultants maintain a weekly schedule which includes appointments on at least three days per week agreed upon in consultation with the Faculty Mentor for posting via an online sign-up system, to be adjusted as necessary to meet student demand. Consultants are also responsible for completing a Client Report form after each session. Newly-hired Consultants participate in pre-service training/orientation meetings and weekly mentoring and feedback sessions with the Writing Clinic Faculty Mentor.
